Census
Census is Hightouch's primary competitor in the reverse ETL space. It reads SQL queries or dbt models from Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift and syncs the results into CRMs, marketing tools, and ad platforms. The sync engine handles incremental updates, field transformations, and multi-object writes (Salesforce Accounts + Contacts). Census offers strong observability: row-level sync logs, data freshness metrics, and alerting. Teams use it to activate data warehouse models without building custom API integrations.
Why it ranks here
- Clean UI for field mapping, filtering, and scheduling. Less cluttered than Hightouch.
- Strong dbt integration: sync dbt model outputs directly without writing SQL in the Census UI.
- Flexible pricing: per-row or per-destination, depending on your usage pattern.
Where it sits
- Hightouch has a slightly larger connector library and more mature enterprise features, but Census is catching up fast.
- Polytomic is cheaper for small teams but lacks Census's observability and scale.
- Fivetran offers reverse ETL but the product is nascent; Census specializes in activation.
How GTM Systems teams use it
- Sync propensity-to-churn scores from your warehouse into Salesforce to trigger rep outreach.
- Push ABM target account lists into LinkedIn, Google Ads, and 6sense for coordinated advertising.
- Replicate customer health metrics from product analytics tables into Gainsight to automate CSM workflows.
- Replace custom Python scripts that POST to CRM APIs with declarative syncs that handle errors and retries.
In-depth notes
- Per-destination or per-row pricing, depending on your plan. High-frequency syncs can get expensive.
- Census requires a clean data model in your warehouse. Garbage in, garbage out. Budget time for data quality work.
- The sync engine respects API rate limits but cannot fix slow APIs. Syncing 50k rows to HubSpot may take hours.
- Identity resolution is manual. Census will not deduplicate or fuzzy-match records. Use a unique key.
- Monitor sync errors closely. A broken sync can fail silently for days if alerting is misconfigured.
Best for
Teams with a production-grade data warehouse who want to sync modeled data into operational tools without custom API code. Strong for dbt-native workflows.
Avoid if
Your warehouse is immature, or you need bidirectional sync (Census is one-way from warehouse to app). Also skip if real-time sync is critical (reverse ETL is batch-oriented).
The rest of Integration & sync
Learning guide
Setup
Connect Census to Snowflake or BigQuery, authenticate HubSpot or Salesforce destination, write a SQL query or connect a dbt model, map fields.
First thing to build
Sync a customer health score from a warehouse table into Salesforce Account with incremental updates, field mapping, and Slack alerting on errors.
What actually matters
- SQL or dbt model source
- Sync schedule and mode (upsert, update, mirror)
- Visual field mapper
- Row-level sync logs and alerting
Watch out
Census does not deduplicate or resolve identity; ensure your warehouse has clean unique keys before syncing.
