Fivetran
Fivetran is the ETL ingestion standard for teams that want to centralize data in a warehouse without writing connector code. It offers 400-plus pre-built connectors that replicate tables from Salesforce, HubSpot, Stripe, Postgres, MySQL, and event platforms into your warehouse. The connectors handle incremental sync, schema drift, API changes, and historical backfills automatically. Teams use it to build a single source of truth for reporting, modeling, and reverse ETL. Fivetran does one thing (ingestion) and does it well.
Why it ranks here
- Enterprise-grade connector reliability. Fivetran maintains the connectors; your team does not debug API changes.
- Incremental sync and change data capture (CDC) minimize warehouse costs and keep data fresh.
- Schema migration handling: when Salesforce adds a field, Fivetran adds the column to your warehouse automatically.
Where it sits
- Airbyte is open-source and cheaper but requires more operational overhead and connector quality is inconsistent.
- Stitch (Talend) is cheaper but the connector library is smaller and reliability lags Fivetran.
- Portable offers long-tail connectors Fivetran does not support but the platform is less mature.
How GTM Systems teams use it
- Replicate Salesforce objects into Snowflake for dbt modeling and cross-system joins (CRM + support + product usage).
- Ingest HubSpot, Marketo, and Google Ads data into BigQuery to build a unified marketing attribution model.
- Stream event data from Segment or Amplitude into Redshift for cohort analysis and funnel reporting.
- Replace brittle Python scripts that hit APIs, parse JSON, and INSERT INTO with declarative connectors that handle schema drift.
In-depth notes
- Per-monthly-active-row pricing. High-volume sources (event streams, large Postgres tables) can get expensive fast.
- Fivetran replicates raw tables. You still need dbt or SQL to model the data into useful shapes.
- The default sync frequency is hourly. Real-time replication costs more and is only available for select connectors.
- Monitor MAR consumption. A misconfigured connector (syncing a billion-row log table) can blow your budget.
- Connector quality varies. Tier 1 connectors (Salesforce, HubSpot) are bulletproof. Long-tail connectors may have gaps or bugs.
Best for
Teams that want to centralize SaaS and database data in a warehouse without building and maintaining connector code. Essential for analytics engineering workflows.
Avoid if
You need bidirectional sync (Fivetran is ingestion-only). Also skip if your data volume is so high that MAR pricing becomes prohibitive.

Learning guide
Setup
Connect Fivetran to Snowflake or BigQuery, select a Salesforce connector, authenticate, and let Fivetran replicate all standard objects into your warehouse.
First thing to build
Replicate Salesforce Account and Opportunity objects into Snowflake, verify schema mapping, write a dbt model to join the raw tables.
What actually matters
- Pre-built connectors with auto-sync
- Incremental sync and CDC for databases
- Schema migration handling
- Sync frequency (hourly default)
Watch out
Fivetran replicates raw tables; you still need dbt or SQL to clean and model the data into useful shapes.
