Hightouch
Hightouch pioneered the reverse ETL category. It reads SQL models or dbt outputs from your data warehouse and syncs those rows into operational tools like CRMs, marketing automation, and ad platforms. The sync engine handles identity resolution, field mapping, deduplication, and incremental updates. Teams use it to activate data science outputs (lead scores, churn predictions) without building custom API scripts. The warehouse stays the source of truth; operational systems become presentation layers.
Why it ranks here
- Native integrations with Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks. No data leaves your warehouse until sync time.
- Visual mapper for complex field transformations and multi-object hierarchies (Accounts + Contacts in Salesforce).
- Observability built in: row-level sync logs, error alerting, and data freshness SLAs.
Where it sits
- Census has similar features but Hightouch's UI is cleaner and the dbt integration is tighter.
- Polytomic is cheaper for small teams but lacks the enterprise governance and scale Hightouch offers.
- Fivetran offers reverse ETL but the focus is still ingestion; Hightouch specializes in activation.
How GTM Systems teams use it
- Sync dbt-modeled lead scores into Salesforce; sales sees the score without querying the warehouse.
- Push customer health metrics from your product analytics schema into Gainsight or Vitally to trigger outreach workflows.
- Sync ABM account lists from the warehouse into LinkedIn, Google Ads, and Demandbase for coordinated targeting.
- Replace brittle Python scripts that POST to Salesforce APIs with declarative syncs that handle retries, rate limits, and logging.
In-depth notes
- Per-monthly-active-row pricing. A row that syncs daily counts as one MAR. High-frequency syncs (every 15 minutes) can inflate costs.
- Identity resolution is your problem. Hightouch will not fix mismatched email addresses or deduplicate records. Clean your warehouse first.
- The sync engine respects API rate limits but cannot work miracles. Syncing 100k Salesforce records hourly may still hit governor limits.
- Hightouch's supposed AI features (natural language field mapping) are half-baked. Use the visual mapper.
- Monitor sync errors religiously. A broken sync can silently fail for days if alerting is not configured.
Best for
Teams with a mature data warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift) who want to activate modeled data in CRMs, marketing tools, and ad platforms without custom code.
Avoid if
Your warehouse is not production-ready, or you need bidirectional sync (Hightouch is one-way from warehouse to app). Also skip if your data model is still in flux.
The rest of Integration & sync
Learning guide
Setup
Connect Snowflake or BigQuery warehouse, authenticate Salesforce destination, create a simple lead score sync from a dbt model or SQL query.
First thing to build
Sync a dbt-modeled lead score table into Salesforce Lead object with field mapping, incremental updates based on timestamp, and error alerting.
What actually matters
- Warehouse SQL or dbt model as source
- Sync schedule and incremental mode (upsert, update, insert)
- Field mapping with transformations
- Row-level error logs and alerting
Watch out
Hightouch will not fix identity mismatches; a broken email or external ID will silently fail to match records.
